Mr. Harper just doesn't get it.
Our Prime Mister, the man entrusted by the public to do what's best for his and our country simply does not get it! He seems to not only not get what ordinary Canadians want, find problems with, and oppose; he simply does not get our history, our stories, or our values.
In eliminating funding for the arts and culture he shows his tremendous lack of understanding of the very culture that makes us the country that we are. He does not get the huge economic impact of the cultural industry on our economy. He does not get that culture is one of our largest exports and he certainly has no understanding of cultural diplomacy, or sustainable communities, or what, in this day and age constitutes a "quality of life!" He does not get that his tactics are ruining our reputation abroad. And he does not get that he continues to offend his own people by deciding for us what we care about, what we want the future of Canada to look like, and what our stories are. We are regressing to some very dark ages with this man as our leader. Everything that Canada is and can be is being undermined. How did we end up here?

Mr. Harper doesn't get it.
his lack of understanding of the larger, long-term repercussions of his decisions is very unnerving. his lack of diplomacy on any of the issues is leaving a very bad taste and sending an entirely wrong message about Canadian people.
galas? rich people in evening gowns? Mr. Harper, those "rich" people you see on tv are the supporters of the arts, the philanthropists, members of private sector who spend real money on participating in culture. The artists, Mr. Harper are ON STAGE! not in expensive gowns, but IN COSTUMES! we are up there earning hard, and small money for what we do so that you and your big oil friends can be entertained and feel decadent while taking in a little bit of culture. I guess you can never step foot into a movie theatre again Mr. Harper since you made that lovely remark. Yes, movies are part of the culture that you so easily dismiss.
Mr. Harper doesn't get it
I don't think Mr. Harper would ever have made similar remarks about auto workers, or CEO's, or chartered accounts. Or anybody. It's just rude, and totally unacceptable especially coming from a so-called Prime Minister.
But it seems that many non-Prime Ministerial Canadians don't get it either, so I wanna thank Mr. Harper for the opportunity he's given us to get the word out there about ourselves - to set the record good and straight! No, we're not lazy hippie types, which is the myth of the artist, as Claire said... We work very hard and give something very important to our society. And we average $12,000 a year for the privilege!
Other countries support their artists doing things differently than we do here. I believe it's the Irish who don't charge artists income tax on artwork they sell. Maybe we ought to look around and see what other countries do that could be useful for Canadian artists, and promote those ideas. I know the federal Liberals, for one, are open to suggestions.
Meanwhile, back in the here and now, if anyone is interested in strategic voting to defeat Harper, here's a website that tracks the up to date polling in all ridings across the country to tell you which candidate you should vote for to defeat the Tory Candidate.
